Ed and Margie Mesa, AZ
We are Ed and Margie and come to United Food Bank’s Help Yourself program nearly every week. For $16, we are able to get a lot of food that we couldn’t get at that price and we make use of everything. If we get bread that has been smushed, we can make bread pudding out of it. Nothing gets wasted. We are both on Social Security and Ed can’t be left alone because of health issues. This food helps feed us for the week and we are so thankful for United Food Bank for their generosity.
Girl’s dream of a new home — and a backyard — comes true. Nine-year-old Maya Tsou has big ideas for her family’s new Habitat home in Queens. “I’m very excited to have my own room,” she says. “I’ve got my decoration plans all figured out. I think I’m going to have maybe four parts — maybe a little reading zone on one side with a little comfortable chair and a bookshelf, and on the other side can be a bed. And the next parts could be a science lab or an art studio.”
10,000 Degrees opened the door for me to go to college. If it wasn’t for them, there would have been no way I would have enrolled in the first place. They gave me a small amount of money and I was able to run with it. The moment everything clicked for me was when I gave a presentation at a high school. I was introduced as a graduate student at UCSF, and I saw the expression on faces of the parents and students change. It was then, when my community realized ‘he’s done it and I can do it too,’ that I finally felt validated.
Betty has helped Cheerful Givers to provide toy-filled birthday gift bags for less fortunate children. It’s important work for her. “Birthdays mean that I celebrate my life and the lives of everyone who considers their life special,” she said. “I love providing parents who want to share birthday joy with their child with this opportunity. I will continue to do whatever I can to further joy in young lives.”
“The New Eyes glasses will make a difference in my life because I will see so much better. My education will improve because without glasses I could not read and write well. I will be able to see far away. I will be able to play without tripping. Also I want to let you know that I’m so happy and thanks for helping me to change my future.” German, 11 yrs old
